چکیده

The long-term goal of this research is to construct a unified global and mesoscale nonhydrostatic numerical weather prediction (NWP) models for the U.S. Navy using new numerical methods specifically designed for modern computer architectures; this unified model is called the Nonhydrostatic Unified Model of the Atmosphere or NUMA. To take full advantage of distributedmemory computers, the global domains of these new models are partitioned into local sub-domains, or elements, that can then be solved independently on multiple processors. The numerical methods used on these sub-domains are local, high-order accurate, fully conservative, highly efficient, and geometrically flexible. Using these ideas we are developing global and mesoscale nonhydrostatic atmospheric models that will improve on the operational models currently used by all U.S. agencies including the U.S. Navy.

Advanced Numerical Methods for NWP Models

The long-term goal of this research is to construct the Navy’s next-generation global numerical weather prediction (NWP) model using new numerical methods specifically designed for distributedmemory and vector computers. To distinguish it from the current Navy global atmospheric model, the navy Operational Global Atmospheric Prediction System (NOGAPS), we shall refer to this new model as the Na...

14: A Next Generation Atmospheric Prediction System for the Navy

A long-term goal of this project is to develop a global cloud-permitting (~3-km resolution) forecast capability as part of the multi-agency next-generation Earth System Prediction Capability (ESPC) initiative. Within the next decade or less, computational platforms with more than 1,000,000 processors will be commonly available and high-fidelity global weather forecasts with variable resolution ...

4D-Var Data Assimilation for Navy Mesoscale NWP

The long-term goal of this Rapic Transition Process (RTP) project is to provide the warfighter with superior battlespace environmental awareness in terms of high fidelity four-dimensional (4D) depiction of the regional/mesoscale atmospheric states. This situational awareness is a key aspect of information superiority in the DoD’s strategic plan to ensure battlespace dominance in the 21st centur...

Massively Parallel Implementation of the Mesoscale Compressible Community Model

Computational uid dynamics and meteorology in particular are among the major consumers of high performance computer technology. The next generation of atmospheric models will be capable of representing uid ow phenomena at very small scales in the atmosphere. The Mesoscale Compressible Community (MC2) model represents one of the rst successful applications of a semi-implicit, semi-Lagrangian sch...
